General
What is a KonTiki kiln?
A KonTiki kiln is a simple, cone‑shaped flame‑cap kiln used to turn dry organic waste into biochar. It requires no electricity, no moving parts, and produces minimal smoke when operated correctly.
What can I burn in a KonTiki X kiln?
Dry biomass: sargassum (beach seaweed), farm waste (rice husks, corn stover, nut shells), forestry slash (branches, bark, wood chips), and any other dry, non‑contaminated organic material. Do not burn plastics, treated wood, metals, or hazardous waste.
Does the kiln work with wet sargassum?
No, fresh sargassum is 80–90% water. You must dry it first.
But we have a solution: We manufacture large‑scale solar dryers specifically for sargassum. They efficiently reduce moisture to below 20% using only sunlight – no fuel, no electricity.
For small volumes, sun drying on black tarps for 2–3 days also works. Contact us to learn more about our solar dryer systems.
Operation & Safety
Does the kiln have a built‑in flame cap?
No – the flame cap is a simple operating technique. We provide clear instructions. Any KonTiki‑style kiln works by creating a flame cap at the top. No moving parts, no electricity.
How does the flame‑cap work?
You light the dry biomass from the top. The rising gases burn in a continuous flame layer (the “cap”) above the kiln, which consumes smoke and particulates. It is a clean, centuries‑old method.
Is the kiln safe?
When used correctly, yes. Kilns reach high temperatures (600–900°C). You must follow safety instructions: keep away from structures, dry grass, or forest fire zones; wear heat‑resistant gloves and eye protection; never leave an active kiln unattended; and quench the biochar completely with water before removal. All buyers receive a detailed safety manual.
Does it produce smoke?
Properly operated, the flame cap destroys almost all visible smoke. Some initial smoke may appear during start‑up or if the material is too wet. With dry material and good technique, emissions are very low – far less than open burning or traditional incineration.
Mobility & Installation
Can I move the kiln?
Yes. Our standard kiln is designed to be towed behind a pickup or SUV (trailer not included). You can take it directly to where the waste accumulates: beach, farm field, or forest landing.
Do I need a concrete foundation?
No. The kiln stands on its own legs or trailer frame. Level ground is recommended. It is designed for temporary placement, not permanent installation.
What are the dimensions and weight?
Please visit our Specifications page for accurate, up‑to‑date information. Our kilns are regularly improved, so dimensions, weight, and other technical data may change without notice on this FAQ page. The Specifications page always shows the current production version.
Is the kiln round or square?
Our kilns are designed as square (pyramidal) cones for simpler, more affordable fabrication without sacrificing performance. The flame‑cap technology works equally well. We may offer round cones in the future upon request.
Can I get a larger kiln?
Yes. We offer custom sizes. The standard portable model is 1.2 m top. Ask us about 1.5 m or 2.0 m stationary kilns for higher throughput.
Pricing & Ordering
How much does a KonTiki X kiln cost?
Kiln only from €4.995 / $4.995 (trailer not included). Prices are ex works Netherlands. Bulk discounts may be available for community or government orders.
How do I order?
We do not use online forms. Send an email to info@kontikix.com. Tell us your location, intended feedstock, and any questions. We will reply within one business day.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes. Shipping costs depend on destination. Customs duties and local taxes are paid by the buyer. We can provide a shipping quote upon request.
Social Mission
What is your “triple bottom line” approach?
We design our business to benefit people, planet, and profit equally. Local communities keep most of the revenue. We provide training and encourage local entrepreneurship. We believe waste should become a local resource, not a burden shipped elsewhere.
Do you work only in poor countries?
No. We work everywhere – including the USA and Europe. Florida has sargassum, Europe has farm and forestry waste. Our kilns are affordable for all, but they solve problems in rich countries too.
Can I get a sample or demo unit?
For serious buyers, we may arrange a demonstration or provide reference videos. Contact us to discuss.
